Perplexity rank tracker: how to track where you appear in Perplexity
Short answer: You don’t get one ranking in Perplexity, you get two. One is whether the answer names your business, and in which position. The other is whether Perplexity cites one of your pages as a source. A Perplexity rank tracker asks a fixed list of customer questions on a schedule and records both. You can do it free with ten questions and a spreadsheet, or pay from about $29 a month for a tool that does it for you. Then measure whether any of it turns into visits and leads.

What “ranking” means in Perplexity
Google shows ten blue links in order, so a rank is one number. Perplexity writes an answer and lists the pages it used underneath. So there are two things to track, and they don’t always match:
- Mentioned, and position. Does the answer name your business? Is it the first business named, or the fourth, or left out entirely?
- Cited, and citation position. Is one of your pages in the sources list, and how high? Perplexity numbers its sources and links them from the answer, so a citation is also a click you can earn.
Most of the time the businesses that get named are not the ones whose sites get cited. Here is a real example.

What one real check showed
We asked Perplexity “best moving company in Dallas”, logged out, on 27 October 2026. It named Einstein Moving Company first and cited 10 sources. Five of the ten were third-party “best movers” list pages: Extra Space Storage, FreightWaves, Forbes Advisor, ConsumerAffairs and moveBuddha. The other five were movers’ own websites.
The first business named was the top pick of the first source cited, a list page from Extra Space Storage. The answer copied that list’s verdict almost word for word. This is one answer on one day, not a study, but it shows what to look at in your own checks. Your position in Perplexity often depends on the lists and directories it reads, not only on your own website.

The sources list for the same answer. The first source is a comparison list page, not a mover’s own site.
How to track Perplexity rankings for free
For one business in one area, a monthly check by hand is enough to start. It takes about 30 minutes.
- Write 10 questions a real customer would ask. Mix general ones (“best roofer in Austin”), specific ones (“roofer in Austin who handles insurance claims”), price ones (“cheap movers in Dallas”) and one comparison with your main competitor (“[you] vs [competitor]”).
- Ask each one in Perplexity in a private window, logged out. Your history changes the answer when you’re signed in. Use the exact same wording every time.
- Record two rankings for each question. Were you named, and in what position? Was your page cited, and at what number? Also note who was named instead and which sites were cited.
- Repeat every month on the same day. One answer means little. A change across ten questions over three months means something.
To save you setting up the columns, download our free Perplexity rank tracker template (CSV). It opens in Google Sheets or Excel and includes the Dallas example row.

What a month of manual tracking looks like. Row 1 uses our real Dallas check. Rows 2 to 5 are made-up examples for a fictional “Your Moving Co.”.
How to read your results
- Share of questions where you’re named. This is your headline number: “named in 3 of 10” this month, “5 of 10” next month.
- Share of questions where your site is cited. Citations are what send visits, so track them separately.
- Lists you keep missing from. If the same list page or directory is cited again and again and you’re not on it, that’s your to-do list. Ask to be reviewed, claim the listing, or get the reviews the list ranks by.
- Who replaces you. The competitor named most often shows what Perplexity has read about them. Look at their reviews, their listings, and the pages of theirs it cites.
Answers change with wording, location and the day. Don’t react to one check. Judge the trend across all ten questions over a few months.
Perplexity rank tracker tools compared
Paid tools do the same job at a larger scale. They send your questions (they call them “prompts”) daily or weekly and chart the results. Here is what each one offers for Perplexity specifically, checked on the vendors’ own pages on 27 October 2026.
| Tool | Perplexity included? | Entry price | Free option | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual spreadsheet | Yes | Free | Yes | One local business, monthly checks |
| Otterly.AI | Yes, on every plan, with ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Copilot | $29/month for 15 prompts | Free trial | Cheapest automated tracking |
| Keyword.com Perplexity tracker | Yes, plus ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews | See pricing page | 14-day trial, no card | Choosing how often to check (hourly to monthly), with client reports |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Yes, with ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews and AI Mode | Custom prompts from €47/month (local currency shown) | No | Teams already on Ahrefs; seeing questions you didn’t think to ask |
| Peec AI | Advertises ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini; check which models your plan includes | Not listed publicly | No | Agencies needing daily data and many seats |
| Which AI Sent | Tracks Perplexity visits and leads, not Perplexity answers (our visibility check covers ChatGPT) | $20/month | Free plan | Proving which rankings bring customers |
We make Which AI Sent, so weigh what we say about ourselves accordingly. For a wider comparison covering ChatGPT and Gemini as well, see tools to track brand mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
How to choose
- One business, tight budget: use the free spreadsheet monthly. Move to Otterly.AI’s Lite plan if typing the questions becomes a chore.
- You need Perplexity and Gemini together: Keyword.com and Ahrefs Brand Radar both cover them. On Otterly.AI, Gemini is a $9-a-month add-on on Lite.
- You’re an agency: count prompts × clients × assistants before you pick a plan. Fifteen prompts covers one client, not ten.
- You want to know if it pays: no rank tracker tells you that. See the last section.
Make sure Perplexity can read your site
You can’t be cited from a page Perplexity can’t read. Its crawler documentation names two user agents:
- PerplexityBot finds and links websites in Perplexity’s results. Perplexity says it is not used to train AI models. Blocking it in robots.txt makes it much harder for Perplexity to cite you.
- Perplexity-User visits a page when a user’s question needs it. Because a person triggers it, Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt.
Our free AI visibility checker reads your robots.txt and flags any AI crawlers you block, PerplexityBot included. Perplexity notes that robots.txt changes can take up to 24 hours to apply.
Rankings are not customers: track what Perplexity sends you
A rank tracker tells you whether you were named. It can’t tell you whether anyone called. Two things close that gap:
- Visits from perplexity.ai. Perplexity usually passes perplexity.ai as the referrer, but GA4 often files it under Referral, where it gets lost. Our guide on how to track Perplexity traffic and leads shows the setup, and the AI referral regex gives you a filter to copy and paste.
- Ask every new customer. Add “Perplexity” as an option to your “how did you hear about us” question. Many people read the answer and phone you without clicking anything.
Which AI Sent connects these for you. It labels every visit, form and booking that came from Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Copilot, and shows the evidence for each. Put that next to your monthly ranking log and you can see whether being named in 5 of 10 answers actually brought in jobs.
How to move up in Perplexity
Nobody outside Perplexity can promise a position, but the real check above points to where to start:
- Get onto the lists Perplexity cites. Your tracker’s “sources cited” column shows exactly which ones. In the Dallas example, five of ten sources were comparison or review lists.
- Earn reviews on the sites those lists use. List pages tend to rank companies by rating and review count.
- State the basics in plain text on your site. What you do, where, prices if you can, and how to book, so an answer can quote you directly. Our site audit for AI search checks this.
- Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere, and add LocalBusiness schema.
Most of this also helps with ChatGPT. See how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT for the full list.
Perplexity rank tracking
Is there a free Perplexity rank tracker?
The free method is a spreadsheet and ten customer questions asked in Perplexity each month, logged out. Our free template has the columns ready. Most paid tools, including Otterly.AI and Keyword.com, offer free trials, but none we checked has a free plan that tracks Perplexity long-term.
How often should I check my Perplexity rankings?
Monthly is enough for a small business checking by hand. Paid tools check daily or weekly. Because answers vary from one run to the next, compare the trend across all your questions, not single answers.
Why does Perplexity give a different answer each time?
Answers depend on the exact wording, your location, whether you are signed in, and what Perplexity finds on the web at that moment. That is why a tracker keeps the wording fixed and checks repeatedly.
What is the difference between being mentioned and being cited in Perplexity?
Mentioned means the answer names your business. Cited means one of your web pages appears in the numbered sources list. You can be named without being cited, often because a list page that mentions you is the source.
Can I see Perplexity traffic in Google Analytics?
Yes. Visits from Perplexity usually carry perplexity.ai as the referrer. In GA4 they often land under Referral, so create a custom channel for AI assistants to see them clearly.
Does Which AI Sent track Perplexity rankings?
Not answers, today. Which AI Sent’s weekly visibility check covers ChatGPT. For Perplexity, it tracks the visits, leads, bookings and revenue that Perplexity sends you. Pair it with a rank tracker or the free spreadsheet to see both sides.
