How to track Gemini traffic and leads on WordPress

Short answer: in WP Admin, open Stats → Traffic (Jetpack) and look for gemini.google.com in the Referrers card, plus bard.google.com for older visits. In GA4 (through Site Kit), Gemini visits that keep their referrer land in the AI Assistant channel. Clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are not Gemini visits: they arrive as ordinary Google search and can't be split out. Many Gemini app visits arrive with no referrer at all, so a “How did you hear about us?” question on your form does the rest.

Gemini is the awkward one of the big assistants on a WordPress site, for two reasons. First, Google has several AI products, and only one of them, the Gemini app and gemini.google.com, sends visits you can label as Gemini. The AI answers inside Google Search look exactly like a normal Google click. Second, a lot of Gemini use happens on Android phones, where the referrer is often lost on the way to your site. So on WordPress the job is to count the Gemini visits you can see, avoid counting the ones you can't, and catch the rest another way.

Step 1: Find Gemini in the Jetpack Referrers card

  1. In WP Admin, open Stats and choose the Traffic tab.
  2. Scroll to the Referrers card and expand it.
  3. Look for gemini.google.com. Also check for bard.google.com: Gemini was called Bard until early 2024, and old bookmarked conversations can still send visits under that name.
  4. Don't read the Search engines or Google rows as Gemini. Jetpack groups Google search visits together, and that group includes clicks from AI Overviews. There is no way to tell those apart in Jetpack.

Jetpack counts views, not visitors, and commercial sites need a paid Stats licence to see the full reports. If the Referrers card only covers a short period, that is usually the reason.

Step 2: Check the AI Assistant channel in GA4

If your site uses Site Kit by Google, it has already connected GA4. Site Kit's own dashboard only shows broad channels, so open GA4 directly:

  1. Go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
  2. Find the AI Assistant row. Google's help page lists Gemini among the assistants this channel recognises.
  3. Add Session source as a secondary dimension and look for gemini.google.com, and also plain gemini, which is what a tagged link shows.
  4. Add Landing page + query string to see which posts and pages Gemini sent people to.

Gemini is the one big assistant where the native channel and your own reports line up neatly, because the channel is Google's and so is the assistant. For dates before the channel existed, or to group Gemini with Perplexity and Claude in one row, build a custom channel group; the AI referral regex generator gives you a pattern that includes both Gemini hostnames.

Step 3: Expect many Gemini visits to show as Direct

Gemini on Android is often opened from the phone's assistant button, the Google app or a widget, and links from those places frequently open without a referrer. Links copied from a Gemini answer into a message or email never carry one. On a WordPress site, those visits land in Jetpack's unattributed views and in GA4's Direct channel. One recent change may help: since around 30 September 2026, people have seen some Gemini links arrive with utm_source=gemini, and Google's John Mueller said he sees it too. Google hasn't documented which Gemini links get the tag, so treat it as a bonus, not a fix. In GA4 a tagged visit shows gemini as the session source even when the referrer was lost; in Jetpack it only appears in the paid UTM report. If your Direct traffic to deep pages, such as a service page or an old how-to post, has risen without a reason, some of it may be Gemini. You can't prove that from stats alone, which is why Step 5 matters.

Step 4: Check Google-Extended and Search Console

Gemini leans on Google's own index, so the WordPress settings that matter are the ones that affect Google:

  • Settings → Reading. “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” must be unticked, or Google, and therefore Gemini, sees very little of your site.
  • robots.txt and Google-Extended. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. A Disallow rule under Google-Extended tells Google not to use your content for Gemini. It doesn't change your normal Google rankings. SEO plugins that edit robots.txt, and some security plugins with an “AI bots” switch, can add this rule without you noticing.
  • Search Console in Site Kit. Site Kit can show your Search Console data in WP Admin. It won't list Gemini, but if pages drop out of Google's index there, they are unlikely to be quoted by Gemini either.

Step 5: Catch the Gemini customers who never click

Gemini answers often name a business without the person ever clicking through. They read the name, search for it later or simply call. WordPress form plugins save what the visitor typed, not how they found you, so add a required dropdown asking “How did you first hear about us?” and list Gemini by name next to ChatGPT, Google, social media and referral. Keep “Google” and “Gemini” as separate options: a customer who says “Google” may have seen an AI Overview, but you can't know that, so count them as Google. Our guide on wording that question has the full list of options.

Other AI assistants to check

In the same Referrers card, look for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. ChatGPT is usually the biggest; see ChatGPT on WordPress and Perplexity on WordPress for their quirks. The general Gemini tracking guide explains the difference between Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode in more depth.

Seeing Gemini leads automatically on WordPress

Which AI Sent connects to WordPress in one click: you approve it on WordPress's own Authorize Application screen and the plugin (also listed on WordPress.org) installs itself. Gemini then gets its own row, with the visits, form entries and WooCommerce orders that followed, and the customers who answered “Gemini” when asked how they found you. A lead is Confirmed when a tracked Gemini visit came before it, and Declared when the customer told you. Clicks from AI Overviews stay under Google, so the Gemini number is a minimum you can defend. It runs alongside Jetpack and Site Kit. Details: WordPress integration.

FAQ

Gemini traffic on WordPress: common questions

Where do I see Gemini traffic in WordPress?

With Jetpack, open Stats, choose the Traffic tab and look for gemini.google.com (and the older bard.google.com) in the Referrers card. With Site Kit, open GA4, go to Traffic acquisition and check the AI Assistant channel with Session source as a second dimension.

Are AI Overviews clicks counted as Gemini on WordPress?

No. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search arrive as normal Google search traffic, in Jetpack's search engine views and in GA4's Organic Search. Neither tool can separate them.

Why does so little Gemini traffic show up?

Many Gemini visits come from the Android and iPhone apps, which often open links without a referrer, and from copied links. Those land in Direct. Some Gemini links have carried utm_source=gemini since late September 2026, but Google hasn't documented it. A 'How did you hear about us?' question with Gemini listed catches many of the rest.

Does blocking Google-Extended hurt my Google rankings?

No. A Disallow rule for Google-Extended in robots.txt only stops Google using your content for Gemini. Normal Google Search crawling and rankings are not affected, but Gemini is less likely to draw on your pages.
