How to track Perplexity traffic on WordPress

Short answer: in WP Admin, open Stats → Traffic (Jetpack) and look for perplexity.ai in the Referrers card. To see which posts Perplexity is citing, use GA4 through Site Kit and add the landing page to the perplexity.ai source. Perplexity rarely adds a UTM tag, so the referrer is what you track. Neither tool links a visit to the form entry it led to.

Perplexity works differently from ChatGPT in a way that matters on a WordPress site: almost every answer carries numbered source links, and those links usually point at a specific post or page, not your home page. So the useful question on WordPress isn't only “did Perplexity send visits?” but “which of my posts is it quoting, and did any of those readers get in touch?” Here is how to answer both with the plugins most WordPress sites already run.

Step 1: Check the Referrers card in Jetpack Stats

  1. In WP Admin, open Stats and choose the Traffic tab.
  2. Scroll to the Referrers card and expand it.
  3. Look for perplexity.ai. There is no older hostname to check, unlike ChatGPT.
  4. Set the period to 30 or 90 days. Perplexity has far fewer users than ChatGPT, so a small site may see only a few visits a month.

Two limits to know about. Jetpack counts views per referrer, so three pages read by one person show as three. And Jetpack asks commercial sites to buy a Stats licence; without one, busier sites see a cut-down version of these reports. If your Referrers card is hidden or only covers seven days, that's why.

Step 2: Use Site Kit and GA4 to see which posts Perplexity cites

Jetpack tells you Perplexity sent views, but not which post each one landed on. For that you need Google Analytics 4, which Site Kit by Google connects for you. Site Kit's own dashboard only shows broad channels, so open GA4 itself:

  1. Go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
  2. Change the main dimension to Session source and search for perplexity.
  3. Add Landing page + query string as a second dimension.

The landing pages in that list are the posts Perplexity is quoting. On a WordPress blog these are often older how-to posts and price or service-area pages. Keep them accurate, and show a clear “last updated” date, because those are the pages a Perplexity reader meets first.

One more GA4 detail: Perplexity visits often sit under Referral instead of Google's AI Assistant channel. They are being counted, just not labelled as AI. A custom channel group fixes that; the AI referral regex generator gives you the pattern to paste in.

Step 3: Don't rely on UTM tags for Perplexity

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many of its links, so a UTM report can rescue visits that lost their referrer. Perplexity's citation links usually carry no UTM at all. On WordPress that means Jetpack's paid UTM report adds little for Perplexity, and the referrer is what you have. The good news is that Perplexity passes its referrer more consistently than most assistants, in the browser and in its apps. Visits that still lose it, for example when someone copies a link into a chat or email, land in Direct and can't be recovered from stats alone.

Step 4: Make sure WordPress isn't blocking Perplexity

You only get Perplexity visits if Perplexity can read your site. Three WordPress places to check:

  • Settings → Reading. Make sure “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is unticked.
  • Your robots.txt. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt in a browser. WordPress creates this file for you, and SEO plugins let you edit it. Look for any Disallow rule under PerplexityBot, which is the crawler Perplexity uses to find pages it can cite.
  • Security and firewall plugins, or your host. Some block “AI bots” as a group with a single switch. If that switch is on, Perplexity can't fetch your posts, and it will cite a competitor's instead.

Step 5: Connect Perplexity readers to form entries

WordPress form plugins save what the visitor typed, not how they arrived, so an enquiry from a Perplexity reader looks like any other entry. The simplest fix is a required dropdown asking “How did you first hear about us?” with Perplexity listed by name next to ChatGPT, Google, social media and referral. It also catches the reader who saw you cited in an answer and phoned instead of clicking. Our guide on how to word that question has the exact options to use.

Other AI assistants to check

While you are in the Referrers card, look for chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai too. ChatGPT is usually the largest by a wide margin; our ChatGPT on WordPress guide covers its quirks, and the general Perplexity tracking guide covers other platforms. Google's AI Overviews won't appear under any AI name: those clicks arrive as normal Google search.

Seeing Perplexity leads automatically on WordPress

Which AI Sent connects to WordPress in one click. You approve it on WordPress's own Authorize Application screen, and the plugin (also listed on WordPress.org) installs itself. From then on Perplexity gets its own row, separate from ChatGPT and the other assistants: visits, the form entries and WooCommerce orders that followed, and customers who answered “Perplexity” when asked how they found you. Each lead is marked Confirmed, Declared or Assisted, so you can see how firm the number is. It runs alongside Jetpack and Site Kit. Details: WordPress integration.

FAQ

Perplexity traffic on WordPress: common questions

Where do I see Perplexity traffic in WordPress?

With Jetpack, open Stats, choose the Traffic tab and look for perplexity.ai in the Referrers card. With Site Kit by Google, open GA4 and search the Session source for perplexity in the Traffic acquisition report.

How do I find which WordPress posts Perplexity cites?

In GA4, open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, filter Session source to perplexity.ai and add Landing page + query string as a second dimension. The pages listed are the ones Perplexity links to in its answers.

Can WordPress block Perplexity from reading my site?

Yes. The 'Discourage search engines' setting under Settings, Reading, a Disallow rule for PerplexityBot in robots.txt, or an 'AI bots' block in a security plugin or at your host can each stop Perplexity fetching your pages.

Does Which AI Sent track Perplexity on WordPress?

Yes. It connects in one click through WordPress's own approval screen and reports Perplexity in its own row, with the form entries and WooCommerce orders that followed each visit.
