How to track Perplexity traffic and leads in GA4
Short answer: open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition, change the dimension to Session source / medium and search perplexity. Clicks from Perplexity answers usually show as perplexity.ai / referral. Google's built-in AI Assistant channel does not name Perplexity, so in many properties these visits sit under Referral. A custom channel group fixes the grouping, and a key event shows whether Perplexity visitors get in touch.

Perplexity is one of the easier assistants to find in GA4, because a click on one of its numbered sources almost always carries the perplexity.ai referrer. What makes it awkward is where GA4 files it. Google's help page describes the AI Assistant channel with ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok as examples, and Perplexity is not among them. So before you build anything, check where it lands in your own property.
Step 1: Find Perplexity in Traffic acquisition
- Go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition and pick a date range of at least 90 days. Perplexity is usually a small source, and a short range can show nothing.
- Click the dimension name above the table and choose Session source / medium.
- Type
perplexityin the search box above the table.
You will usually see perplexity.ai / referral. Now switch the dimension back to Session primary channel group with the same search. If the row reads Referral, GA4 is counting Perplexity but not calling it AI. If it reads AI Assistant, your property already recognises it, and Step 3 is optional.
Step 2: See which pages Perplexity cites
Each Perplexity source links to one specific page, so your landing pages show what Perplexity quotes you for. Open Reports → Engagement → Landing page, click Add comparison, and set the condition to Session source exactly matches perplexity.ai. The table now lists only the pages Perplexity sent people to.
Read the list for surprises. A pricing page or an old FAQ page near the top means Perplexity is quoting it in answers right now, so check that every price, service area and date on it is still correct.
Step 3: Group Perplexity with your other AI sources
Go to Admin → Data display → Channel groups, create a new group (or edit your existing AI group), and add a channel named AI assistants with the condition Source matches regex. Include perplexity\.ai in the pattern alongside the other assistants; the AI referral regex generator builds the full list. Then click Reorder and move the channel above Referral, because GA4 assigns each visit to the first channel that matches. Custom channel groups are applied when reports are shown, so older Perplexity visits are regrouped too.
Step 4: Count the enquiries, not just the visits
Make sure your form submission or purchase event is marked as a key event in Admin → Data display → Events. Back in Traffic acquisition, the Key events column next to perplexity.ai / referral is the number that matters.
For Perplexity, also open Reports → Acquisition → User acquisition with the dimension First user source. Someone can find you in a Perplexity answer, leave, and come back days later by searching your name on Google. Traffic acquisition credits that second visit to Google; First user source still shows perplexity.ai. Comparing the two tells you how often Perplexity starts the journey without getting the credit.
Step 5: Test with a real Perplexity click
Perplexity normally adds no UTM tag, so you cannot fake a visit by typing a tag into the address bar. Ask Perplexity a question about your business by name, click your site in its sources, and open Reports → Realtime overview. Your visit should appear with source perplexity.ai within a minute or two, unless your cookie banner blocks GA4 until consent.
What GA4 can't see from Perplexity
| What the person did | What GA4 records |
|---|---|
| Clicked a numbered source in a Perplexity answer | perplexity.ai / referral and the landing page |
| Copied your address from the answer and opened it later | (direct) / (none) |
| Read the answer, then searched your name on Google | google / organic for the session; perplexity.ai only as First user source if they clicked before |
| Read the answer and phoned you | Nothing |
| Declined analytics cookies | Whatever your consent mode allows, often nothing |
The phone row is the one GA4 can never fill. Ask new customers “How did you first hear about us?”; our guide to wording that question covers why “first” matters.
Other assistants to check in the same report
Search the same Session source / medium view for chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. ChatGPT behaves differently from Perplexity because it tags many links with utm_source=chatgpt.com; that setup is in ChatGPT and AI traffic in GA4. For a Perplexity label you can pass to forms, see Perplexity traffic in Google Tag Manager, and for the bigger picture the general Perplexity tracking guide.
Perplexity leads and revenue, beside GA4
GA4 answers how many people Perplexity sent. Which AI Sent answers which of them became customers. It runs its own lightweight script and does not read or change your GA4 property, so the two sit side by side. It connects in one click on WordPress, Wix and Google Tag Manager, or with a snippet elsewhere. Perplexity gets its own row next to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot; the source stays with the visitor for 90 days and is attached to the form they send or the job you mark won, and answers to “How did you first hear about us?” are counted too, so each lead is labelled Confirmed, Declared or Assisted. The differences are laid out in Which AI Sent vs GA4.
Perplexity traffic in GA4: common questions
Where is Perplexity traffic in GA4?
In Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition. Change the dimension to Session source / medium and search perplexity; clicks from Perplexity answers usually appear as perplexity.ai / referral.
Why is Perplexity under Referral and not AI Assistant in GA4?
Google's description of the AI Assistant channel names ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok, not Perplexity. If your property files it under Referral, add perplexity\.ai to a custom channel group and place that channel above Referral.
Does Perplexity add a UTM tag that GA4 can read?
Usually not. Perplexity's source links normally carry no utm_source, so GA4 relies on the perplexity.ai referrer. Visits without a referrer, such as copied links, are counted as direct.
How do I know if Perplexity visitors become leads in GA4?
Mark your form submission or purchase as a key event, then read the Key events column for perplexity.ai / referral in Traffic acquisition. Check First user source in User acquisition too, because people often return later through Google.
