How to track Gemini traffic and leads on Squarespace
Short answer: first open Settings → Crawlers: if Block known artificial intelligence crawlers is ticked, your robots.txt blocks Google-Extended, which asks Google not to use your pages in Gemini. Then open Analytics → Traffic → Traffic sources and look for gemini.google.com under Referral, and under Search too. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted as Google search, and calls from people who read a Gemini answer aren't counted at all.

Gemini reaches a Squarespace site in three ways: a click in the Gemini app or on gemini.google.com, a click on a source in Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode, or a phone call from someone who read your name in an answer. Squarespace's analytics can see only the first, and one Squarespace setting can quietly switch it off.
Step 1: Check the crawler box before you look at any numbers
Open the Settings panel and click Crawlers. If Block known artificial intelligence crawlers is ticked, Squarespace adds a list of AI bots to your robots.txt file. Its help article names the bots on that list, and Google-Extended is one of them. Google-Extended is the token Google reads to decide whether your pages may be used to ground answers in the Gemini apps, so with the box ticked you are asking Google to leave your pages out of Gemini. Google says the token doesn't affect normal Search rankings, so nothing else changes and the cost is easy to miss. The box is all-or-nothing: Squarespace says it can't block only some bots or some pages. If you ticked it to keep your work out of AI training, you are also asking to be left out of Gemini's answers.
Step 2: Find gemini.google.com in Traffic sources
- Open the Analytics panel, click Traffic, then click Traffic sources.
- Set the date range to 90 days; a single month on a small site can look empty.
- Click the arrow beside Referral and look for
gemini.google.com. Very old shared chats can still arrive frombard.google.com. - Then open Search and look there too. Squarespace describes Search as organic traffic from Google and other search engines, and it doesn't say which channel a google.com subdomain like Gemini's goes into.
Click the arrow beside the Gemini source to see the paths under it, which are the pages people landed on.
Step 3: Account for the gemini tag and the Android app
Since around 30 September 2026 some links in Gemini answers carry utm_source=gemini. Squarespace's help explains campaign tracking only for links made with its own URL Builder, not tags added by someone else. If you see a source called plain gemini anywhere in the table, add it to the gemini.google.com count. Taps in the Gemini app on Android often arrive with no referrer at all, and Squarespace counts a visit with no referring page as Direct.
Step 4: Read AI Overviews in Search keywords, not Traffic sources
Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode come from google.com, so they sit in the Search channel with every other Google click. The nearest view Squarespace offers is Analytics → Traffic → Search keywords, on the Google tab, once your site is verified with Google Search Console. Long, question-style keywords with many impressions and few clicks are often the searches where an AI answer sat above your link. Our post on tracking Google AI Mode traffic covers what Search Console itself reports.
Step 5: Test Gemini in AI Visibility, then compare with real visits
The SEO/AI Visibility panel runs prompts against ChatGPT or Gemini and marks each one Mentioned or Not mentioned, with your position. Under AI Visibility, click Check results, tick Gemini, and run your branded and non-branded prompts. It works on version 7.1 sites in English, and each run uses AI credits. This tells you whether Gemini names you for the questions you chose. It doesn't count visitors. Put it next to the Gemini rows from step 2: if Gemini mentions you often and the visits stay at zero, the answer probably names you without a link people click, and phone calls are the likelier result.
What Squarespace shows for Gemini, and what it misses
| What the person did | What Squarespace records |
|---|---|
| Clicked a link on gemini.google.com | A visit from gemini.google.com (check Referral and Search) |
| Tapped a link in the Gemini Android app | Often Direct |
| Clicked a source in an AI Overview or AI Mode | Search, as a Google visit |
| Read your number in a Gemini answer and called | Nothing |
| Any of the above, with the AI crawler box ticked | Fewer of all of them over time, with no warning |
For orders, Squarespace credits Revenue to the last click, so a shopper who found you in Gemini and bought after a later Google search is credited to Search. Our post on why AI attribution undercounts explains why every assistant leaves these gaps.
Other assistants to check
In the same Referral list, look for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. The crawler box also blocks GPTBot and ClaudeBot; see ChatGPT traffic on Squarespace and Perplexity traffic on Squarespace. The general Gemini tracking guide explains how the Gemini app differs from AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Counting Gemini leads on Squarespace with Which AI Sent
Which AI Sent works on Squarespace with one line of code pasted in Settings → Advanced → Code Injection → Header (Code Injection needs a Squarespace plan that includes it). It gives Gemini its own row, separate from Google search, reads both the gemini.google.com referrer and the gemini tag, and follows each visit to the form submission or order it led to. It also records each customer's answer to “How did you first hear about us?”, so people who saw you in Gemini and phoned are counted too, marked Declared instead of Confirmed. See all integrations.
Gemini traffic on Squarespace: common questions
Where do I see Gemini traffic in Squarespace?
Open Analytics, click Traffic, then Traffic sources, and set a 90-day range. Click the arrow beside Referral and look for gemini.google.com, then check the Search channel too, because Squarespace doesn't say which channel it uses for Google subdomains.
Does Squarespace's AI crawler setting block Gemini?
It can. Ticking Block known artificial intelligence crawlers in Settings, Crawlers adds Google-Extended to your robots.txt. Google uses that token to decide whether your pages may be used for Gemini apps, though Google says it doesn't affect normal Search rankings.
Does the Squarespace AI Visibility tool check Gemini?
Yes. In the SEO/AI Visibility panel you can choose ChatGPT or Gemini and run branded and non-branded prompts. It reports whether your site was mentioned and its position. It doesn't count visits, and each run uses AI credits.
Are Google AI Overviews counted as Gemini in Squarespace?
No. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode come from google.com, so Squarespace counts them in the Search channel. The Search keywords panel, with Google Search Console connected, shows clicks and impressions by keyword but can't separate AI answers from normal results.
