How to track ChatGPT traffic on Webflow

Short answer: if your site has the Analyze add-on, open the Insights tab, go to Site overview, click the Filter icon and filter by Traffic source = Generative AI, or by Referral domain = chatgpt.com. Without Analyze, Webflow has no built-in traffic report, so you need Google Analytics or another tool. Either way, you won't see ChatGPT visitors that arrive as Direct navigation, or people who read ChatGPT's answer and then called you.

Webflow sites tend to belong to agencies, SaaS companies, studios and service firms that care how their site looks and converts. Those are exactly the businesses buyers now ask ChatGPT to shortlist. Unlike most website builders, Webflow's paid analytics add-on already has a separate bucket for AI chat tools. Here's how to use it, where it stops, and how to connect ChatGPT to the leads you actually close.

Step 1: Check that Analyze is on

  1. Webflow's built-in analytics, Webflow Analyze, is a paid add-on bought by a Workspace admin. If you don't have it, skip to Step 5.
  2. With the add-on active, go to Insights tab → Settings → General, turn on tracking for site visitors, and publish the site. Results start appearing within about 30 minutes.
  3. If you chose opt-in or opt-out tracking, Webflow notes you need a consent management solution. Visitors who decline consent won't be counted, ChatGPT visitors included.

Step 2: Filter by the Generative AI traffic source

Open Insights → Site overview, click the Filter icon at the top left, choose Traffic source and pick Generative AI. Webflow's help docs say this source is triggered when a visitor clicks a link from AI chat tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity, and is detected through AI referrers or AI URL parameters. Set the date range as wide as it goes: Analyze shows up to 90 days at once, and AI visits are a small share for most sites, so a 7-day view is noisy.

Step 3: Isolate ChatGPT from the other assistants

Generative AI groups all assistants together. To see ChatGPT on its own, filter by Referral domain instead and look for chatgpt.com (older visits may show chat.openai.com). You can save this as a custom audience under Insights → Audiences → New Audience, so the same filter is one click away next month. Then open Pages to see which pages ChatGPT visitors land on. Those are the pages ChatGPT is citing, and they are worth keeping accurate.

Step 4: Use the chatgpt.com UTM tag

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many of the links it shows. Analyze reads UTM parameters automatically and shows utm_source as Campaign Source, so filtering by Campaign Source = chatgpt.com catches some visits whose referrer was stripped. Check both filters: a visit can carry the tag, the referrer, or both.

Step 5: Read Direct navigation with care

Analyze labels a visit Direct navigation when the referrer is empty, and also uses it as the fallback when browser or OS restrictions hide the source. Links opened from the ChatGPT mobile and desktop apps often arrive with no referrer and no tag, so some ChatGPT traffic is almost certainly in Direct. Analyze also gives each session its last known source: someone who found you in ChatGPT and came back a week later from Google is counted as Search organic on that later visit.

What Webflow Analyze can't tell you

Customer journeyWhat Webflow records
Clicks a ChatGPT link and submits your Webflow formA Generative AI session and a click on the submit button, but the form submission itself carries no source
Opens your site from the ChatGPT appOften Direct navigation
Finds you in ChatGPT, returns later from Google and convertsSearch organic for the converting session
Reads ChatGPT's answer, then calls or emails youNothing

Webflow's AEO features (on Team or Enterprise plans with Analyze) add prompt insights and AI bot crawl data, which tell you whether AI tools mention and read your site. That's useful, but a mention isn't a lead. For the calls and emails, ask: add a required “How did you first hear about us?” field to your Webflow form with ChatGPT, Google, another AI assistant, social media and referral as options. Our guide to wording that question explains why “first” matters.

Other AI assistants to check

The Generative AI source already covers Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude. To compare them, filter Referral domain by perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. Clicks from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode come from Google itself, so they appear as Search organic, not Generative AI. The full host list is in our AI traffic tracking guide, and if you also run Google Analytics, our AI referral regex builds the matching filter.

Connecting ChatGPT to leads automatically

Which AI Sent works on Webflow today with one line of code: paste it into Site settings → Custom code → Head code and publish (Webflow custom code needs a paid site plan). Our one-click Webflow app is in Webflow's marketplace review, so the snippet is the way to connect for now. It labels visits from ChatGPT and the other assistants, follows each one to the form submission, and records the visitor's “how did you hear about us?” answer, so every AI lead is marked Confirmed, Declared or Assisted by the evidence behind it. It doesn't need the Analyze add-on. See all integrations.

FAQ

ChatGPT traffic on Webflow: common questions

Where do I see ChatGPT traffic in Webflow?

With the Analyze add-on, open the Insights tab, go to Site overview, click the Filter icon and choose Traffic source = Generative AI, or Referral domain = chatgpt.com for ChatGPT on its own. Without Analyze, Webflow has no built-in traffic report.

Does Webflow Analyze have an AI traffic source?

Yes. Webflow's help docs list a Generative AI traffic source for clicks from AI chat tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity, detected through their referrers or URL parameters. Visits from the ChatGPT app that carry no referrer still fall into Direct navigation.

Can Webflow show which form leads came from ChatGPT?

Not directly. Analyze can show that Generative AI visitors clicked your submit button, but Webflow form submissions aren't labelled with a traffic source. A “how did you first hear about us?” field or an attribution tool fills that gap.

Does Which AI Sent work with Webflow?

Yes. Paste one line into Site settings, Custom code, Head code and publish. Our one-click Webflow app is in Webflow's review, so the snippet is the way to connect today.
