How to see which WooCommerce orders came from ChatGPT
Three ways to find the orders and revenue that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and other AI assistants send your store: one built into WooCommerce, one in GA4, and one plugin. Each has different blind spots.
Most guides to AI traffic stop at visits. A store owner wants something simpler: which orders came from ChatGPT, and what were they worth? You may already have part of the answer, because WooCommerce records where each order came from.
Method 1: WooCommerce’s own Origin column (free, already installed)
Since version 8.5, WooCommerce has a built-in Order Attribution feature. It stores the source of each order: the source type (Direct, Referral, Organic, UTM and a few others), the referring site, any UTM tags, the device and how many pages the customer viewed.
- Check it’s switched on: WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → Features → Order Attribution.
- Open WooCommerce → Orders. The Origin column shows where each order came from.
- Open an order. The Order attribution box shows the source type, the source and any UTM values.
What to look for:
- ChatGPT: ChatGPT adds
utm_source=chatgpt.comto many of the links it shows, so these orders often appear withchatgpt.comas the UTM source. Others show as a referral fromchatgpt.com. - Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot: usually a referral from
perplexity.ai,gemini.google.com,claude.aiorcopilot.microsoft.com. The full list of hosts is in our AI traffic reference.
The limits: Order Attribution uses a last-click model within the visitor’s session. A customer who found you in ChatGPT on Monday and came back through a Google search on Friday is credited to Google. There’s also no built-in AI total. You read orders one at a time, or export the order meta (fields starting with _wc_order_attribution_) to a spreadsheet and add them up.
Method 2: GA4 purchase reports
If your store sends purchase events to GA4, you can see AI revenue by channel. Since May 2026 GA4 has an AI Assistant channel. It covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and a few others, but it may miss Perplexity and Claude. So build a custom channel group that includes every assistant, then look at Total revenue and Key events by channel. Step-by-step: ChatGPT and AI traffic in GA4. To get the regex without writing it: AI referral regex generator.
The catch: GA4 revenue is only as good as your ecommerce tracking. Ad blockers, consent choices and checkout redirects to payment pages all create gaps between GA4 and your real WooCommerce order list.
What neither method can see
| Customer journey | Woo Origin | GA4 |
|---|---|---|
| Clicked a ChatGPT link and bought in the same visit | Yes | Yes, if purchase tracking works |
| Clicked from ChatGPT, came back days later via Google | No: credited to Google | Depends on the report’s attribution settings |
| Clicked in the ChatGPT app, which sent no referrer | No: Direct | No: Direct |
| Asked ChatGPT, then searched your store name | No: Organic | No: Organic |
| Clicked a Google AI Overview | No: Organic | No: Organic |
The last three rows are why AI-sent revenue usually looks smaller than it is. For the method behind counting those customers honestly, see Confirmed vs Declared AI attribution.
Method 3: the Which AI Sent plugin
The Which AI Sent plugin on WordPress.org does this without spreadsheets or GA4 setup. It labels visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot, plus Meta AI, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral, You.com, Phind and Poe. Each completed WooCommerce order is counted once and credited to the channel that brought the customer, so you see AI orders and AI revenue next to every other channel.
- Only the essentials are sent: for orders, the order number, total and currency are sent. No names, emails or addresses.
- Every AI order is labelled by evidence: Confirmed (a tracked AI visit), Declared (the customer said an AI sent them, from a “How did you first hear about us?” answer) or Assisted.
- Google AI Overviews are never guessed into the AI column, so the AI revenue figure is a defensible minimum.
Setup is one click from your dashboard, or install the plugin and paste a site key. Details are on the WordPress integration page. It works alongside WooCommerce’s Origin column and GA4, not instead of them.
WooCommerce and AI orders
Can WooCommerce show orders from ChatGPT without a plugin?
Partly. WooCommerce’s built-in Order Attribution (version 8.5 and later) records the source of each order, so orders from a ChatGPT link show chatgpt.com as the UTM or referral source in the Origin column. It uses last-click within a session and has no AI total, so you need to add orders up yourself.
Why do some ChatGPT orders show as Direct?
ChatGPT’s mobile and desktop apps don’t always pass a referrer. If the link also has no UTM tag, both WooCommerce and GA4 record the order as Direct.
Does utm_source=chatgpt.com mean the order came from ChatGPT?
Yes. ChatGPT adds that tag to many links it shows. Orders with that UTM source came from a click inside ChatGPT during that session.
Can I see WooCommerce orders from Google AI Overviews?
No tool can reliably do this today. Google passes AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks as ordinary Google search, so they appear as Organic.
