llms.txt for local businesses: what it is, whether it helps, and a free maker

Short answer: llms.txt is a plain text file at yourwebsite.com/llms.txt that tells AI assistants who you are and which pages matter most. It’s a new, optional standard: some AI tools read it, many don’t yet, and it takes about five minutes. Which AI Sent has a free llms.txt maker that writes it from a short form.

What it is

Websites have long had robots.txt, a file that tells crawlers where they may go. llms.txt is a newer idea in the same spirit, aimed at AI. Where robots.txt says “you may read these pages”, llms.txt says “here is a short summary of this business, and these are the pages worth reading first”.

It’s written in simple Markdown: a title, a one or two sentence description, a few facts, and a list of links.

Does it actually help?

The straight answer: nobody can promise that. It’s a proposal that parts of the industry have adopted and others haven’t. There’s no public evidence that having one changes what ChatGPT or Gemini say about a local business today.

So why bother? Three reasons. It costs five minutes. It can’t hurt. And it forces you to write one clear sentence about what you do, where and for whom, which is useful everywhere else too. Treat it as a small bet, well below the things that clearly matter: letting AI crawlers in, business details in schema, real reviews and a clear website.

Make yours

  1. In your dashboard, open Tools → llms.txt maker.
  2. Fill in your name, a short description, areas served, services and contact details.
  3. Check the key pages. The first time you open the tool it suggests the pages your visitors open most, taken from your own data.
  4. Click Download llms.txt.

Put it on your website

Upload the file to the top folder of your website so it opens at yourwebsite.com/llms.txt. On WordPress that’s the same folder as wp-config.php, or use a file manager plugin. On Webflow and Shopify you’ll need a redirect to a hosted file. Wix and Squarespace don’t allow files at the top level, so skip it there: you’re not missing much, and schema matters more.

Keep it true and short

  • Describe the business as it is. Don’t stuff it with keywords or claims like “number one mover”.
  • List five to ten pages, not your whole sitemap.
  • Update it when your services, areas or phone number change.

Check it

Open the address in a browser. You should see plain text. Then run the site audit: the llms.txt check will show as found.

FAQ

llms.txt

What is llms.txt?

A plain text file at the top level of a website, written in Markdown, that gives AI assistants a short summary of the business and links to its most important pages.

Do ChatGPT and Gemini use llms.txt?

It is a new, optional standard and support varies. There is no public evidence that it changes what assistants say about a local business today. It is quick to add and does no harm.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt tells crawlers which pages they may read. llms.txt summarises the business and points to key pages. A website can have both.

Can I add llms.txt on Wix or Squarespace?

Not easily, because they do not allow files at the top level of your address. It is fine to skip it on those platforms.
