How to track ChatGPT traffic on Shopify

Short answer: in Shopify admin go to Analytics → Reports → Sessions by referrer and look for chatgpt.com (or chat.openai.com). That shows ChatGPT visits you can see, but not the shoppers who arrive from the ChatGPT app with no referrer, or who read ChatGPT's answer and then search your store name.

More shoppers now ask ChatGPT things like “what's the best waterproof hiking boot under $150?” and get a short list of stores. Some click through. Here's how to see those visits in Shopify, what the reports miss, and how to connect the visits to actual orders.

Step 1: Find ChatGPT sessions in Shopify Analytics

  1. In Shopify admin, open Analytics → Reports.
  2. Open the Sessions by referrer report (it's in the Acquisition group).
  3. Search the referrer list for chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com or openai.
  4. Set the date range to at least 30 days. AI referrals are still a small share for most stores, so short ranges look noisy.

Shopify groups referrers by referring channel, platform, medium and traffic type, and also exposes raw dimensions such as referrer path and UTM fields. That matters for ChatGPT, because of how it tags links.

Step 2: Check the UTM fields, not just the referrer

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many of the links it shows. When the browser doesn't pass a referrer, which is common for links opened from the ChatGPT mobile and desktop apps, that UTM tag is often the only clue left. In your Shopify reports, add the UTM source dimension or filter for chatgpt.com so tagged visits without a referrer aren't lost.

Step 3: See which orders came from ChatGPT

Visits are only half the story. Shopify's reports can be filtered by referrer, including order-level referrer fields, so you can look at orders whose referrer or UTM source is ChatGPT. Open a sales or orders report, use Filters, and filter by the referrer name or source containing ChatGPT. Treat the result as a floor, not a total, for the reasons below.

Other assistants to check on Shopify

ChatGPT isn't the only AI shopping helper. While you're in the referrer report, also look for perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. Our AI traffic tracking guide lists the full set of hosts, and the AI referral regex generator builds one filter that catches all of them.

What Shopify's reports can't see

Shopper journeyWhat Shopify records
Clicks a ChatGPT link in a browser and buyschatgpt.com referral or UTM
Clicks inside the ChatGPT app, no referrer and no tagDirect
Reads ChatGPT's answer, then searches your store name on GoogleGoogle / organic
Researches in ChatGPT on the phone, buys on a laptop laterWhatever brought them back
Clicks a Google AI OverviewGoogle / organic (Google doesn't separate it)

That's why ChatGPT's real impact on a store is usually bigger than the referrer report suggests. For the reasoning, see why every AI attribution tool undercounts.

If you also use GA4 on Shopify

If your store sends data to Google Analytics 4 (for example through Google's sales channel app), GA4's AI Assistant channel groups visits from ChatGPT and some other assistants. It may miss Perplexity and Claude, so a custom channel group is safer. Step by step: ChatGPT traffic in GA4.

Tracking ChatGPT orders without the spreadsheet work

Which AI Sent labels visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot and follows them to the lead or sale, then adds a “How did you first hear about us?” answer so shoppers who never clicked are counted too, labelled separately. Our one-click Shopify app is in Shopify's review; until it's approved, Shopify stores connect by adding one line of code, and the setup page walks you through it. See all integrations.

FAQ

ChatGPT traffic on Shopify: common questions

Where do I see ChatGPT traffic in Shopify?

In Shopify admin go to Analytics, then Reports, and open Sessions by referrer. Look for chatgpt.com or chat.openai.com, and also check the UTM source fields for chatgpt.com.

Why does ChatGPT traffic show as Direct in Shopify?

Links opened from the ChatGPT apps often don't pass a referrer. If the link has no UTM tag either, Shopify can't tell where the visit came from and records it as Direct.

Can I see which Shopify orders came from ChatGPT?

Partly. You can filter Shopify's reports by order referrer or UTM source containing ChatGPT. Orders from shoppers who read ChatGPT's answer and then searched your store name will show as Google instead.

Does ChatGPT send traffic to Shopify stores?

Yes. ChatGPT lists and links to stores in its answers, and many of its links carry utm_source=chatgpt.com. The share is still small for most stores, so check at least 30 days of data.
