Is ChatGPT replacing Google? What the 2026 search data says for small businesses

Short answer: no, not yet. In the latest US data, search engines received about 5.7 times more website visits than every AI tool combined. But more than a third of people now use ChatGPT in a given month, and the customers it sends are the ones your analytics is worst at showing. So don’t panic, and don’t ignore it. Measure it.

You have probably seen the headline, or a graphic making the same point: ChatGPT has overtaken Google, search is finished, change everything. If you run a moving company, a dental practice or an online store, that is a worrying thing to read between jobs. It deserves a calm look at the actual numbers.

The best public source is the State of Search Q2 2026 report from Datos, with analysis by Rand Fishkin of SparkToro, published on 27 July 2026. It is based on the browsing of millions of desktop users in the US and Europe between April and June 2026. The figures below are the US ones, as summarised in SEOPress’s July 2026 news round-up.

The numbers, side by side

What was measured (US, Q2 2026)Figure
Share of all website visits that went to search engines10.52%
Share of all website visits that went to AI tools1.83%
People who visited ChatGPT in June 202636.05% of users
People who visited Gemini in June 202619.53% of users
People who visited Claude in June 202611.51% of users
Searches that led to a website Google doesn’t own40.7%
Searches that led to a Google-owned property20.4%

Two things are true at once here.

Google is still the main road. 10.52% against 1.83% means search engines get roughly 5.7 times the visits of all AI tools put together. The report also noted that AI tool use dipped from May to June in both the US and Europe, so the line does not only go up.

AI is a real side road, and a busy one. More than one in three people in the panel used ChatGPT in a single month. That is far too many to treat as a fad, and it does not count Gemini or Claude users.

Why “ChatGPT outranked Google” graphics mislead

Most of the viral claims are built on a specific kind of list: the websites people go to after using a search engine. In this report, the top three destinations from US search engines are YouTube, Reddit and Amazon.

Think about what that list can and can’t tell you. Google is where those journeys start, so it was never going to top a list of places people go next. And when ChatGPT appears on a list like that, it means people are typing “ChatGPT” into a search engine to get to it. That is a sign of ChatGPT’s popularity. It is not a sign that Google has shrunk.

We could not confirm the exact rank quoted in the graphic from the report’s public summary, so we are not repeating it here. The verified figures above are enough to answer the question.

The number that should worry you more

Look again at the last two rows of the table. Only 40.7% of searches ended on a website Google doesn’t own, which Rand Fishkin described as a record low. Many searches now end on the results page itself, or on a Google property.

So the honest picture for a small business is not “Google is dying”. It is this: Google still has most of the audience but passes less of it on to you, while a growing group of customers asks an AI assistant first. Both changes make it harder to see where your customers really come from.

Why your analytics shows almost no ChatGPT

If a third of people use ChatGPT, why does your traffic report show a handful of visits from it, or none? Because of how those customers arrive.

  • They click from an app. Links opened in the ChatGPT app often arrive without a referrer. Unless the link carries a tag such as utm_source=chatgpt.com, the visit is filed under “Direct”. The Datos panel is desktop browsing, so it doesn’t count that app use either.
  • They search your name instead. Someone asks ChatGPT for the best roofer nearby, gets three names, and types yours into Google. Analytics credits Google.
  • They just call. For local and service businesses this is the most common path, and no analytics tool sees a phone call’s origin.
  • Google’s own AI is invisible. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported as ordinary Google search, and nobody can split them out reliably.

We cover every blind spot in why every AI attribution tool undercounts. The short version: the ChatGPT figure in your analytics is a floor, not the total.

A 15-minute check you can do today

  1. Look for AI referrers. In GA4, open the traffic acquisition report and look for the AI Assistant channel, or search the source list for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com. Our guide to AI traffic in GA4 shows where to click.
  2. Check your own platform’s report. Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and WordPress each show referrers in a different place. The platform guides give the menu path for each.
  3. Catch every assistant, not only ChatGPT. The free AI referral regex generator builds one filter that covers them all.
  4. Follow the visit to the lead. A visit is not a customer. Check whether any of those sessions reached your form, booking page or checkout.

Then ask the one question analytics can’t answer

Add “How did you first hear about us?” to your contact form and your phone script, with ChatGPT and “another AI assistant” as named options. The word “first” matters: without it, most people answer “Google”, because that is the last thing they did.

This is the only way to see the customers who asked an AI and then called or searched your name. The wording that works is in the most valuable question you’re not asking. Run it for 30 days before deciding how much AI matters to your business. Your own numbers will tell you more than any industry graphic.

What to do with the answer

  • Keep doing what works on Google. It is still where most of the audience is, and the same clear, well-reviewed, well-described business is what AI assistants recommend too.
  • Don’t rebuild your marketing around a headline. Shift budget when your own leads show AI customers arriving, not before.
  • Start measuring now. The businesses that know their AI numbers in six months will be the ones that started counting today.

That measuring is what Which AI Sent does: it follows AI visits through to the lead or sale, asks customers how they found you, and labels each AI customer by the evidence behind it, so the number is one you can stand behind.

FAQ

ChatGPT vs Google in 2026

Is ChatGPT replacing Google?

Not yet. In the Datos State of Search report for Q2 2026, 10.52% of US website visits went to search engines and 1.83% went to AI tools, so search engines still get about 5.7 times more visits. ChatGPT is growing alongside Google rather than replacing it.

How many people use ChatGPT compared with Google?

In June 2026, 36.05% of the US users in the Datos panel visited ChatGPT, 19.53% visited Gemini and 11.51% visited Claude. Search engines still received far more visits overall: 10.52% of all US website visits, against 1.83% for all AI tools combined.

Why doesn't ChatGPT show up in my website analytics?

Many customers who use ChatGPT never arrive through a trackable link. Clicks from the ChatGPT app often show as Direct, some people search your business name on Google afterwards, and others simply call. Analytics credits Google or nothing, so the ChatGPT number you see is a minimum.

Should a small business stop investing in Google because of AI?

No. Google still has most of the audience, and the things that help you there, such as clear pages, reviews and accurate business details, also help AI assistants recommend you. Measure how many customers AI sends you first, then adjust your budget based on your own numbers.
